NAME: Steve Avery
OFFICER POSITION: Treasurer
HOMETOWN: Ponte Vedra Beach, FL (transplanted to Utah in 1992)
FAMILY: Married with 1 child (Landon)….they both think I’m crazy. :-)
OCCUPATION: Project Manager at American Express since 1992
AVERAGE WEEKLY TRAINING: 8 hours’ish for Olympic distance…ramping up to over 20 this winter for my races in 2008
FAVORITE WORKOUT(S): I grew up a swimmer, but swimming in a pool for a long time doesn’t do it for me. I am a runner as of the age of 37. My favorite workout now is a nice run about 60 minutes or so….and if it’s not on concrete or asphalt, even better.
FAVORITE/MEMORABLE RACE(S): My fist open water tri, the 2006 St. George Tri (Olympic), is memorable because I was scared to death….it was my first OW swim ever. The 2006 Bridger Ridge Run (a 20 mile trail run across a mountain range in Bozeman, MT) is memorable for me because I fell and cracked a rib at mile 4 and persevered and endured in the snow, ice, rain, mud and rocks, and finished over 8 hours later (the 2005 and 2007 runs went much better!). The 2007 Vikingman Tri is memorable because I finished my first Half-Ironman distance race vertically.
CURRENT TRIATHLON GOAL(S): HIM Cali 70.3 (March, 2008); HIM Boise 70.3 (June, 2008); and the gran’-daddy, IM CdA (6/22/08)
WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO COMPETE AND TRAIN: It may sound cliché, but it the reason is “because I can”. I have realized in my life, that today may be my last. I do what I do because I can. I have the health and desire to do it. I have a strong history of cancer in my family, and I’m daring ‘it’ to mess with me. When I’m standing knee-deep in the water, I am so nervous about what’s coming and so elated about thinking about the finish line, that I know I’ll finish no matter what. When I cross the finish line of any race, no matter the race or the place, I consider myself the luckiest person on the Earth, just to be able to throw that last foot across the finish line.. It’s good to be alive!
