This year’s Shark Attack will feature the same fun and family-friendly atmosphere as years past. The Shark Attack will focus on the thrill of completing a triathlon, whether it is your first or fiftieth! The race is designed for the novice triathlete, but offers a great early season warm-up, brick session, or friendly competition between groups of experienced triathletes. Electronic timing will be provided. Participants will be ranked by finishing time, and the top finishers in each age-group will be recognized at a post-race ceremony. The Shark Attack is the perfect place to experience the tradition of triathlon! The age limit for the Kids race is 7 to 15 years old. NOTE: age is determined on June 12, 2010, so if the child must be at least 7 and no older than 15 on or before June 12, 2010. Any racer younger than 7 years old will require Race Director approval prior to registering. Any racer older than 15 will be required to register in the Adult racer category. A racer younger than 15 is permitted to register in the Adult race, but must be able to complete the Adult distances with no outside assistance. DISTANCES:
Kids Race: Swim: 100 yd, Bike: 3.2 miles, Run 1.2 Miles – Teams allowed ** Swim takes place in a 6 lane 50 yard pool. Swimmers will have their start staggered approximately every 5 seconds. Swimmers will be lined up according to their estimated swim time. ** Teams – Each team member must sign up individually. When signing up as a team on Active.com, each team member must enter the same team name. TRIATHLON NEWBIE CLINIC/PRE RACE TRAINING DAY - May 22nd - 8AM: A free "newbie" triathlon clinic/ pre-race training day will be held on Saturday, May 22nd at the race venue. Several of the basics will be covered such as transitions, starting, etc. The clinic will be followed by a group ride and run on the course. PRE-RACE WALKABOUT---JUNE 11th, 7:30 PM: The Desert Sharks will also be conducting a pre-race walkabout on Friday, June 11th, at 7:30 PM at the race venue. This is to get you familiar with the race area, transition and answer any of your last minute questions. VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION: Orientation for all volunteers is TBA. You will receive your volunteer assignments and be trained in your position. We are still looking for volunteers so, if you, your friends, or families are interested in volunteering for the Shark Attack Triathlons, please contact Jen Leatham for more information. Volunteers will receive a Shark Attack t-shirt and free food. Volunteer positions may include: registration, transition area set up, race start support, timing, aid station personnel, pointers along the run and bike course, aid station on the run course and finish line support. Groups and organizations are encouraged to volunteer as a group and have a blast supporting the racers! COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:
Swim Course (Pool 300 yards): The swim course is a timed start with participants lining up according to estimated swim time for 300 yards. This is a snake style swim with participants swimming 1 length of the 50 yard pool, then under the line into the next lane. This is done 6 times as swimmers snake up the lanes from one side of the pool to the other. Swimmers will be started approximately every 5 seconds. Swimmers must enter the pool feet first. Lifeguards will be placed along the perimeter of the pool. Spectators will be allowed in the pool area; however, they must remain in specified areas. Swimming aids (arm floaties, kickboards, fins, paddles, etc) ARE NOT ALLOWED in the adult race. Bike Course (11.5 miles total): The bike course is an out-and-back 11.5 mile ride. The “out” is a gradual uphill of approximately 290 feet of climbing, and the “back” is a very quick ride back to T2. The course consists of one technical S-curve on a hill that will be well marked. Bike Course Map Run Course (5K = 3.1 miles): The run course is an out-and-back 5K route. The course takes you to the north side of the pool property to intersect with the Jordan River Trail. The course does consist of a few switchbacks as you head down to the river bottoms over the edge of the bluff. Runners will stay on paths that consist of pavement and bridges. Route will be clearly marked with aid/water stations strategically placed. Run Course Map KIDS RACE: Swim Course (Pool 100 yards): The swim course is a timed start with participants lining up according to estimated swim time for 100 yards. This is a snake style swim with participants swimming 1 length of the 50 yard pool, then under the line into the next lane. This is done 2 times as swimmers snake up the lanes from one side of the pool to the other. Swimmers will be started approximately every 5-10 seconds. Racers must enter the pool feet first. Lifeguards will be placed along the perimeter of the pool. Spectators will be allowed in the pool area; however, they must remain in specified areas. Coast Guard-Approved Swimming aids may be allowed for the Kid’s Race with the prior approval of the Race Director; if approved, these swimmers must start at the end of the swimmer line. Bike Course (3.2 miles total): The bike course is an out-and-back 3.2 mile ride. The kid’s bike route has minimal climbing with an elevation gain of only 39 feet (approx.). Kids Bike Course Map Run Course (1.2 miles): The run course is a out-and-back 1.2 mile run which also follows the Jordan River Trail. The course takes you to the north side of the pool property to intersect with the Jordan River Trail. Route will be clearly marked with aid/water stations strategically placed. Kids Run Course Map DIRECTIONS Coming from the North or South, take the 12600 S. exit off of I-15 and head West. Drive West to 1300 West and turn left (South). Take 1300 West to Withers Lane (~12765 South) and turn left (East). Follow Withers Lane to 1125 West and the venue is right there. South County Pool, 12765 South 1125 West, Riverton UT 84065 PARKING Racers and spectators are strongly encouraged to park at the Riverton City Park and Rodeo Grounds area (parking lots and legal street parking). This will prevent potential hazards for kid racers on the bike while adult racers are leaving the venue. Parking Map CANCELLATION POLICY All entries for individual and team participants are non-transferable. Upon successfully registering, you have agreed to our no refund policy. Partial refunds/credit will be processed for medical reasons only. In order to receive a 50% event credit toward next year's race, we must receive your cancellation request in writing (email or letter) 30 days prior to race day, along with an official doctor's note supporting the request (scanned and E-mailed or by letter). Those who sustain an injury after this date and would like to submit a request for an exception to our refund policy should email stevea@desertsharks.com up to 14 days prior to the event, along with a verifiable doctor's note, for special consideration on a case by case basis. Refunds will not be processed for disqualification from this event for any reason, including disqualification during the event resulting from USAT competitive rules or disqualification resulting from proven fraudulent information. There are no transfers of entry fees allowed at this event. Registration materials must be picked up by participant with a picture I.D. Participants and/or family members may not pick up packets for other athletes. Under USA Triathlon rules, participants found racing under another person’s name will be disqualified and could be barred from USA Triathlon membership for one full year; this is a USA Triathlon rule.
