So, I bought this really sweet tri bike this year. I LOVE it!!! I haven't done a whole lot of biking outside of tri's, so the tri bike seemed like the perfect option for me. (has been perfect this year!)

Now I have some friends who think that I should do a 200 mile ride with them next summer (Seattle to Portland). It sounds really cool, but I don't know that a tri bike is the perfect option for such a ride...so I was thinking I'd probably rent a road bike. (Drafting is encouraged and considered almost a MUST to finish timely) So, then I got to thinking...when I had my tri bike fitted, it took about an hour. If I rent a road bike, how do I make sure I get a good fit? 200 miles is a long ways to ride on an ill fitting bike! Is renting really a good option?? If I ride my tri bike but can only be in the drops for 1/2 the time because of safety issues and/or drafting is that better than renting a bike? Or do I need to face the fact that I am never going to reach certain financial goals because I am never going to have "enough" equipment and start looking for a cheap road bike?

I guess i have another question too...how much difference is there training on a road bike vs. a tri bike? If you're gonna do both kinds of riding next summer, which bike do you put on the trainer for the winter riding??

Any thoughts?

....for my T2! :45 seconds!

The race was pretty good overall:

Swim: 28:05
It went well.. I tried to get close to the starting line. I failed yet again to draft off anybody. Oh well. Swim went on just fine. I tried to swim hard the last straight away back to the dock. The ground was pretty rocky, but I made it out just fine.

T1: 1:19
This was pretty quick for me I guess. I was going to leave my shoes on the pedals, but then a few minutes before the race, I got nervous for some reason, so I just put my bike shoes on and then ran out and mounted my bike.

Bike: 1:20
I averaged about 18 mph, which is really good for me, so I was happy. It was a big downhill coming back to the transition area, so it felt good to pedal hard and have some speed. A few people wiped out and saw some pretty gnarly road rash. It made me a bit nervous as I got my speed up. Also, I couldn't just let myself go down the big hill near the end, I rode my breaks a bit and still got up past 40 mph. Yikes!

T2: :45
I took my feet out of my shoes and left them on the pedals, racked my bike, slipped on my shoes (no socks), sun glasses, and I was outta there!

Run: 43:33
I started hard, then got tired in the middle, then finished really hard. If I trained more, I think I would be able to improve the middle part of my run. It was a nice course though.. hilly, a bit of trail, a little shade, over a river on a bridge.

I had a great time and a pretty good race too. I only wish there was more shade at the finish line.

Got to meet a few more sharks too!

Is anyone else doing the Bear Lake Brawl on Sept 6th?
Does anyone still want to - you can register online until Sept 1st.

I have a cabin in Garden City (just a couple miles up the road). I could probably fit two more bikes and people in my van and you could even stay at my cabin with me if you would like.

Due to other circumstances, none of my family will be coming up (except maybe my 14 yr daughter). Therefore, I could probably fit 6-10 at the cabin depending on sleeping arrangements. The cabin has a 2 bathrooms w/ showers, 3 bedrooms, full kitchen and BBQ, living room w/ tv & movies, deck, beach access etc. We can plan a dinner, drinks and even get Bear Lake Raspberry Shakes for dessert. You can bring your spouse and kids if you'd like. If they didn't want to go to the race (however they pay $10 to each volunteer) they could stay and hang at the cabin or beach.

I plan on going up Friday afternoon and back Saturday after the race. I need to drop off and pickup kids in Morgan so we could drive separate or leave your vehicle in Morgan.

Let me know if anyone is interested.

I wasn’t sure I was going to write a report this time because I had probably the worst race of my 4th years in triathlon. But I figure someone might get something out of it (as I always get something out of others’ reports) and those people that want to laugh can because I don’t always give a SH$@ what others think.

My hubby was great to even take the two little ones and himself to his mom’s overnight Friday so I could get a good night’s sleep, pack without distractions, and leave early in the morning. After getting packed, I even watched the intro of “What it Takes” and a little bit of Kona Ironman 2006 DVDs to get my mind into race mode and get motivated etc.

I got up at 5 am and left (Davis County) at 5:30 am. I was tired and uncertain how to work the pre-race nutrition with the later start time. I was going to be in the last wave (Sprint Athena) at 10:20. Even during transition setup, I wasn’t quite into it.

I have been having OW anxiety lately and so I went and checked out the swim. I was estimating the distance between buoys. I was doing the mental imagery of swimming the course like a smooth fast Mike Phelps or other Olympic swimmers as I have been watching recently. I was even okay while waiting in the water. Did okay for a few minutes then …sure enough I went mental again! I had to alternate between breaststroke, backstroke and freestyle until the 2nd buoy. This was the first time I actually thought about quitting. But I have never had a DNF before and didn’t want to. As I looked around there I was among about the last 12 in the water – this really sucked. But I also knew they were just as scared as I was. I helped one lady a couple times by yelling at her when she got off course and asked another man if he was going to be okay. I know I probably shouldn’t be worrying about others and instead focus on my race – must be the mother in me. Once I got to the 2nd buoy the lifeguard asked if I wanted to hold on a rest a minute but I said, “No, I just want to finish this swim, but will you please stay by me till I make it.” While out there, I thought of Mike Logan and his story about swimming the backstroke and being last out of the water. And it helped me get through it knowing he survived and went on to do ironman.

T1 took me forever to get my wetsuit off.

As I started on the bike, I didn’t have much motivation as I knew I was already way behind. I tried to get some fuel in me. As I rode along the lower road, there were times I was alone. This really gave me time to reflect inward. I have always been a middle of the packer so it was odd to be out there alone. I thought it was symbolic in a way. The emotion overcame me and I started to cry. I told myself…see when it comes down to it, it is only you, you alone, that is responsible for your outcome. I can get all the advice from this person or that magazine, but unless I implement it or do the workouts, do the diet, etc etc etc…I was struggling getting over 12 mph. It just felt like I didn’t have the fuel in the body or the motivation in the mind. I had forgotten it was a gradual 1-2% grade the first half. But it was mostly just me. This was the second time during the race I thought about quitting. This is when I thought of Kelly’s Ironman story and how she would not quit because of her kids and family. Although mine were not there, I didn’t like the thought or going home and to back to work telling people I gave up. Well I regrouped, tried to pull my sorry ass self together and I decided to power up the hill. There were a couple others walking but I wasn’t going to now! Once up the hill I had a great second half of the bike.

During T2 I had to pee but I decided I wasn’t going to make my time any worst than it already was. As I headed out of T2 and along the road until the hwy….I was pleasantly surprised to get a lot of nice comments of encouragement from other athletes – and ones that I could tell (well guessed from their equipment and bodies) were elites already done with their race (probably even the Olympic). So not all of them are snobs.

I walked more of the run than I wanted to but at this point I was just happy that I had talked myself into finishing the race. I appreciated the volunteers and the aid stations being staffed and having plenty of water and Gatorade even for us at the end.
The volunteers were wonderful and so nice. I made sure to tell them often how I appreciated everything they do. I really appreciated the last volunteer just before the last bridge that was yelling not to give up at the end, to finish strong etc. I told her thanks for the extra push and gave her a high five.

As I walked back to transition, I overheard athletes talking about their splits and their competitors. But for the first time for me I didn’t care I think even think about that stuff. It was a different race for me for a multitude of reasons.

Back at the awards, I ran into Kelly and she asked how it went. I got emotional and cried again when I told her it wasn’t a good day. We talked a few minutes and I share some personal thoughts. I appreciated her.

On the drive home, my husband called to see how it went and I cried some more. When I drove into the driveway of my mother-in-law’s home, my 5 year ran and gave me a big hug and said, “did you win the race mommy?” and I just laughed and cried at the same time because my husband explained to her (and me) that she was prepped to say what a good job I did for finishing the race. Then I walk in the door and my 18 month old yells, “mama, mama!” and the dog comes running and jumping. Then my mother-in-law says, “Well, at least you got a shirt out of it.” Family - that it what life is about – good days and bad days!

So this race has been a different kind of race for me…a real eye (and mind) opener. It wasn’t necessarily about not doing well and having my run 5 minutes longer etc….it was about the personal inner struggles I have had this past year with my diet, exercise, and the mental issues the go along with it for me. It was about the unexplainable OW anxiety I still get even after increasing my pool time and a few OW practices. It’s about my struggle with mind over matter.

I still haven’t decided now whether I dare do a half ironman next year, as it is my ultimate goal to do one before I am 40 (gives me 3 years). Some self-talking I have going on in my head is…Do I sign up and that in turn will make me commit to the training? Do I hire the best coach to get me in shape and prepared? Will that even make a difference if I can’t do it on my own then what makes me think a coach will be able to help me? Do I see how I do over the next few months and decide how dedicated I am? Do I take another year and work on my OW swim, do some another half marathon, do a metric century ride, do a couple Olympic races…then look at the half the following year? Do I see a sports psychologists? Well, I have the Bear Lake Brawl in two weeks and we will see how that goes before making any more decisions. Any how….. that’s my long and introspective race report.

OK,
Let's head back to the DAQ Building on North Temple tomorrow for some airport intervals on our bikes. We'll meet at 6:30PM and head out for usual warmup. We'll shoot for 4 intervals (or 2 laps). Should be fun!

For Thursday, here is what we are going to do. Since we are going to start basing a lot of the Thursday workouts off of that Daniels Running Formula, we should all probably do a 5K time trial run to figure out where our fitness levels are. So...Thursday night we will meet at 7PM at Liberty Park (SE Corner, not where we usually meet). We'll park and meet by the drinking fountain that is on the SE Corner. We will do a 1 lap jog warmup, meet back at starting location to stretch, etc. Then we'll do a 5K time trial (2 full laps and a little). This should be a all out effort (ie like you are racing a 5K). Heck..to make it interesting and fun like a race, I'll bring some swag for everyone that shows up, along with water, Hammer Heed & some Hammer Gel for before & after. This will be a great way to really find out where we all are, and then we will have a clear idea of what paces we should be running in our workouts over the next little while.

See ya'll there!

I lost my bike computer at Jordanelle. I am looking to get one with cadence, which I haven't had before. Any recommendations? Wireless or not? I have my annual dividend credit for REI and found this one
http://www.rei.com/product/751831 I have used Cat Eye before and found it to be a good brand.

Now this might show how stupid I am about this stuff...but with cadence, it does not attach to the front tire like the others, right? Won't it attach to the back or by the pedals? So this will also give me the added benefit of tracking my stats when it is on the trainer, right?

Finally, my husband and I have installed the other computers I've had on my bikes without too much difficultly...will the cadence computer be just as easy or will I need the LBS to install it?

Thanks!

Ok heres a ride Im betting no one has heard about. Its called the York 38 Special. It is a mountian bike Race/Fun ride starting in York Montana. My wife and I just did it this weekend as a 1 year annaversy gift to ourself (Her first time and my fifth) and we are still married.
It starts between 7 and 9 am. We started at 8 am. When we started it was 38 degrees, but dont worry about bundling up because you start off with a 2 mile climb that warms up the whole body. This is one of the two hardest climbs of the ride. What makes it hard is not only how steep it is (Im not unsure of the grade) and there is no warmup. This is followed by a short down hill of about 2 miles then a a climb of about a mile then a decent of 2 to bring you to the first aid station. Now these need to be talked about. The valunteers are always super freindly, but the treats oh my goodness. The bring home baked, cookies, brownies, and the likes. This is one of the only rides that you can gain wieght while doing it. The first 22 miles is mostly striaght climbing. Then you start a 8 mile decent, 3 of which are single track (this is the only single track section the rest is dirt road) through a lush evergreen forest. Then back to the road to end with some small rollers. This ride offers great treats, amazing views, and benifts the York Volnenter Fird Department. All in all if you are around Helena Montana in the end of August you should bring your montian bike and do this ride. It is challanging enough to offer things for everyone but not too challaging to be intimadating. Or do like a do make a special trip every year to do this ride. Its worth it. Oh I forgot as part of the entry fee you get a York Burger (one of the best burgers anywhere) and a Beer. (Or a pop for the nondrinkers)
